Life can often feel overwhelming, and it is easy to become caught in negative thought patterns or spirals. One simple yet powerful practice that can help shift your perspective is gratitude. By intentionally noticing and appreciating the positive aspects of life, we can foster emotional resilience, strengthen our relationships, and enhance overall wellbeing. In this blog, we will explore how cultivating gratitude—both internally and externally—can support mental health, along with practical tools to make it a part of your daily life

So what is gratitude?

One of the tools I often use in my work as a counsellor is gratitude. It can be cultivated in many ways—through daily glimmers, quick-fire reflections, poetry, journaling, or simply taking a moment to notice the positive aspects of life. These practices help clients shift their focus from challenges to appreciation, fostering emotional resilience and wellbeing.

According to Robert A. Emmons, a leading researcher in the field of gratitude, this practice has two core components. First, gratitude is “an affirmation of goodness”—recognising the positive aspects of life. Second, it involves acknowledging that the “sources of this goodness are outside of ourselves” (Emmons, 2010). By recognising the contributions of others or circumstances beyond our control, clients can deepen their sense of connection, gain perspective, and enhance their emotional balance.

However, gratitude also needs to come from within, as genuine appreciation arises when we truly acknowledge and feel the goodness in our own lives. Together, these aspects of gratitude—internal recognition and external acknowledgement—support emotional wellbeing and foster a more positive outlook.

Incorporating Gratitude into Daily Life

Incorporating gratitude into daily life is a simple yet powerful way to support mental health and nurture a more mindful mindset. Life can be hard, and it is very easy to get caught in a negative spiral. Taking a moment to stop, pause, and reflect can be a powerful way to reshift your focus and regain perspective, helping you notice the positive aspects of life even in challenging times.

Here are some simple ways to make gratitude a daily habit:

  • Keep a journal: Write down a few things you are grateful for each day, no matter how small.
  • Pause and notice: Appreciate everyday moments, such as sunlight, birdsong, or a smile.
  • Thank others: Express appreciation to friends, family, colleagues, or even strangers.
  • Daily rituals: Reflect on something positive in the morning or before bed.
  • Visual reminders: Use notes, quotes, or objects to prompt gratitude throughout the day.
  • Reflect and grow: Combine gratitude with reflection on personal achievements and lessons learnt.

These simple practices help cultivate a more positive mindset and strengthen emotional resilience.

A Practical Tool: The G.R.A.T.E.F.U.L Mnemonic

A mnemonic is a memory aid—a word, phrase, or acronym that helps you remember something. In the context of gratitude, it can serve as a simple tool to help you practise gratitude daily. One example is the G.R.A.T.E.F.U.L mnemonic:

  • G – Good things in my day: Notice small wins or positive moments.
  • R – Relationships I value: Reflect on the people who support and uplift you.
  • A – Achievements, big or small: Recognise your accomplishments, however minor.
  • T – Things that bring me joy: Focus on activities or experiences that make you happy.
  • E – Experiences I am thankful for: Recall meaningful moments or lessons from the day.
  • F – Favourable moments: Identify moments that went better than expected.
  • U – Understanding and lessons learnt: Appreciate personal growth or insights gained.
  • L – Love received or given: Acknowledge the love and kindness shared in your life.

How to use it: Take a few quiet minutes each day—morning or evening works well—to reflect on each letter and write down your thoughts in a journal. Over time, this practice can help shift your mindset, strengthen emotional resilience, and nurture a deeper sense of wellbeing.

By making gratitude a daily habit, you can cultivate a more positive outlook, enhance your emotional health, and develop a greater sense of connection with yourself and the world around you. If you would like more information, please get in touch.
